Updating a Dinosaur (Avery the Armoire - ROUND 2)

So I'm slightly disappointed with myself for even posting Avery as she was last time around. I did not want to leave her as a TV armoire. I knew that no one has those huge TV's anymore, and even if they do, they really aren't buying armoires for them. I knew she needed to be repurposed. But that meant power tools, and that meant involving the Hubs. Now I don't mean to come down on him too hard. He's a wonderful man who works hard to provide for his family. So let's just say that working all those hours tend to leave him...a bit...unavailable for my projects. I pretty much need like, a 6 week window from "hey do you think we can  ___" (and please note that I am using my Puss-in-Boots eyes and the sweetest tone I can muster) till he actually drags out the tools and helps. 6 week window. Average.

So Avery sat in my garage, not selling, for about that amount of time. I told him I knew why. She needed yet another makeover. Craig's List made the makeover official when I saw the ad for & scored two giant sheets of pegboard (Curb alert! SCORE!) I slapped some paint on the pegboard to match the interior of the armoire, had the hubs add another shelf, and Voila! Avery would have another chance at being useful. I envisioned that if she did not sell, she would go to my screened in back porch and would serve as a gardening station. The pegboard backing would hold my shovels, gloves and all my other goodies.

She could also serve other purposes still. A craft center in a craft room - the pegboard will hold all your ribbons and gadgets perfectly! And hey - how great are those little holes for keeping all your quilts and sheets   aerated? Nice. I think that's what the lady who bought her had in mind.

Avery came with me to the Fancy Flea in Lakeland, FL this past November 12th and found her forever home that day.

Here she is, all gussied up for her debut.

So I guess my lesson here is I should always go with my gut. I knew from the get-go to ditch the TV armoire concept, and she found a home as soon as I repurposed her. Hip Hip Hooray.

Till next time!

  3. I see those out for garbage pick-up all the time... I cand see why she's a hard sell. Better to go w/ a repurposed function on those monsters!

  4. I think this is a great lesson in repurposing furniture and items to keep pace with changing lifestyles and needs. Didn't see Avery's previous style but the changes you describe were quite smart indeed ... and the lovely lady found a home. Totally empathize with your 6-week-hubs-lead-time ... mine too, same reasons I think ... thought you wrote that beautifully and sensitively.
